I am pleased to inform you that Gov. Tina Kotek recently signed legislation that will make Oregon the first state in the country to officially change the title of "physician assistant" to "physician associate." This decision marks a significant milestone in the advancement of the PA profession.
The Oregon Society of Physician Associates is optimistic that this change will enhance public awareness of the vital roles and responsibilities that PA's fulfill in health care. It also serves as a testament to the ongoing efforts of the association to modernize and elevate the practice of physician associates in Oregon. Notably, this change in title will not alter any aspects of a PA's practice or scope of responsibilities.
The new law took effect on June 6, with the Oregon Medical Board tasked with establishing the necessary regulations and guidelines. Our medical group is actively developing an implementation plan which will involve updating physician associates titles on ID badges and other relevant platforms. We will keep you informed of our progress in the weeks ahead.
