Paso a Paso expands parenting tools to Spanish-speaking families in rural communities

Paso a Paso staff share Triple P parenting tools with Redway families, providing care, support and resources close to home.

Founded in 2001, Providence’s Paso a Paso is a community health program that provides culturally responsive parenting education, health support and care navigation to Spanish-speaking families throughout Humboldt County.

Recently, Paso a Paso brought the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) Seminar series to Redway and Rio Dell, rural communities south of Eureka, to reach families with limited access to resources. In collaboration with First 5 Humboldt, the South Humboldt Family Resource Center and the Rio Dell Community Resource Center, the program offered three 90-minute sessions in Spanish to support parents of children from birth through the teen years.

Triple P is a prevention-focused program that equips parents with positive parenting strategies that promote healthy child development and reduce adverse childhood experiences, such as chronic stress, conflict or lack of support. By emphasizing early connection, communication and consistency, parents can create safe, nurturing home environments where children can thrive.

“Families in rural areas often experience isolation. This program is about meeting families where they are — culturally, linguistically and geographically — and giving them practical tools to support their children,” said Haydee Hopkins, Paso a Paso social worker.

Beyond the curriculum, the program helps strengthen relationships and foster a sense of belonging among participants.

“These seminars create a space where parents can learn together, share their experiences and feel less alone,” said Jessica Clothier, Providence community health supervisor. “That sense of community is just as important as the parenting tools themselves."

In 2025, a total of 15 families participated in the programs hosted in Redway and Rio Dell, taking home tip sheets, resources and certificates of completion.

Through programs like Triple P, Paso a Paso continues its long-standing commitment to connecting families to care and resources close to home.
