Kadlec Parkinson’s Support Group breaks down isolation

Bill Stevens shares his journey with Parkinson’s Disease in Kadlec Regional Medical Center Parkinson’s Support Group.

Bill Stevens was on a flight home from Hawaii when he learned from a quiz in an on-flight magazine that he might have Parkinson’s Disease.

That was many years ago, and he now shares his journey in Kadlec Regional Medical Center’s Parkinson’s Support Group.

“We all share what we have gone through and are dealing with,” said Stevens, a U.S. Air Force veteran. “We share information and experience. Everyone has the same condition, but for each person it is different and personal.”

Kadlec offers a range of support groups to benefit the community. A list of groups can be found on the Kadlec website, or by calling 509-265-6236. For many participants and their caregivers, the groups are a lifeline.

Stevens started as a participant in the Parkinson’s Support Group 16 years ago, and for the past 14 years he has led it as a volunteer. It meets on the third Monday of every month at 1:30 p.m. at the Kadlec Healthplex in Richland, Wash. All are welcome. Many people attend with their spouses or other caregivers.

Stevens encourages people to linger and enjoy time together with people who understand. At any given meeting, a participant is likely to find someone in the room who has gone through the same challenge and find information and encouragement.

The group helps break down the isolation that often comes with the disease.

“I would love to see more people come to the group,” Stevens said. “It is a great support group. We help each other out and learn from each other.”
