Launched in 2005 by Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers, the Creating Opportunities for Physical Activity program delivers school-based physical education and activity to elementary students in underserved urban districts where access to PE teachers is limited.
COPA provides classroom teachers with training in standards-based physical education —
an instructional program aligned with state requirements — and a Providence-designed curriculum that supports lifelong, healthful physical activity. It also involves participation from before and after school staff, expanding access to physical activity opportunities to students beyond regular school hours.
COPA organizes special events such as jog-a-thons and promotes in-class activities including Instant Recess, a structured activity that encourages students to take a short movement break. Beyond the classroom, COPA engages families through exercise classes, health education and family nights that encourage low-cost, accessible ways to stay active and healthy.
The program recently helped Crestwood Street STEAM Magnet school in Rancho Palos Verdes earn the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s America’s Healthiest Schools award for the second consecutive year. The school credited COPA as a key contributor to its success in building a culture of wellness and daily movement.
“Our program provides opportunities for everyone to be physically active and nurtures a warm, positive environment. We are creating lasting opportunities for children and families to build healthful habits while strengthening the well-being of the communities we serve,” COPA Program Supervisor Latarrin Sheppard said.
In 2025 alone, the COPA supported 11 schools, worked with 200 teachers and served 5,300 students.
