In rural Northeast Washington, where access to fresh food can be limited by distance and geography, the Northeast Washington Hunger Coalition (NEW Hunger Coalition), is addressing hunger at its source — by delivering locally grown produce to the communities that need it most. In 2025, Providence Inland Northwest Washington supported that work with a grant to help reduce food insecurity and improve nutrition across the region.
The NEW Hunger Coalition works to improve the diets of vulnerable populations in a rural, tri-county region by providing fresh, nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. The organization focuses on two key initiatives: Farm to Food Pantry and Grow Your Own Row. In 2025, the coalition delivered more than 85,000 pounds of produce.
The Farm to Food Pantry program brings fresh produce at peak conditions to people who need it most. The coalition purchases from 20 local farms and delivers food to isolated communities in eight food deserts, serving Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille counties in Washington.
The Grow Your Own Row program provides food pantry clients with education, support and materials to plant, grow and harvest nutritious produce at home or in community gardens. Each spring, clients receive hands-on instruction, vegetable plants, seeds, soil and tools at no cost.
“Providence’s funding enables the NEW Hunger Coalition to fulfill its mission to reduce hunger and improve diets in rural Northeast Washington,” said Stephani Smith, director of the NEW Hunger Coalition. “By investing in our operational programs, Providence helps us remain active in rural communities — securing healthy food, teaching nutrition and empowering people to live healthier, more active lives.”
