From relief to resilience — A proactive disaster strategy rooted in love

The St. Joseph Fund’s (SJF) Proactive Disaster Relief and Recovery Strategy is based on the understanding that communities recover better when support begins before disaster strikes. As climate-related events, worldwide conflict and displacement become more frequent, the previously established reactive model has become ineffective. Through its proactive approach, SJF provides an annual unrestricted grant to vetted and trusted partners, helping them respond faster, stay longer and better reach the people in vulnerable communities who are impacted by disasters.

SJF partners with Catholic Relief Services, Center for Disaster Philanthropy and Catholic Charities USA to support immediate relief and long-term recovery and resilience, and to build the capacity communities need to prepare for future emergencies. This includes strengthening local networks and infrastructure and helping people access basic needs, navigate housing and receive mental health support.

This strategy evolved from years of disaster relief, recovery grantmaking and listening to partners on the front lines. SJF saw that restricted, event-specific funding often arrives too late while consistent, unrestricted support gives local partners the flexibility to act immediately, adapt to changing conditions and strengthen preparedness over time.

The benefits of this strategy are clear. Emergency response is faster, support for vulnerable communities is more equitable and local resilience is stronger, with more room for innovation. Further, SJF is positioned as a true partnernot just a funderhelping communities protect health, reduce barriers and grow stronger before the next crisis arrives.
