What's more, GME contributes to the financial health of Providence— the programs generated approximately $184 million in revenue/reimbursement in CY 2023. Providence ranks among the top 100 organizations for number of programs and number of residents and fellows.* We sponsor over 50 ACGME or otherwise accredited residencies and fellowships through nine sponsoring institutions. We also partner with ateaching health center and universities to train residents in an additional dozen programs.
As we close out another incredible academic year for Providence GME, we want to extend special appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Steve Salerno, who stepped down in February from his longstanding role as Designated Institutional Official for GME in Oregon.
Dr. Salerno passed away on July 16 after a long and hard-fought battle against an agressive neu roendocrine tumor. As our DIO for Oregon, he was a strong and principled advocate for GME, for the residents in our programs, and for all of our faculty.
His colleague, Dr. Steve Freer, shared these heartfelt sentiments: "He had a strong sense of both grace and irony, a great sense of humor, and an imp
eccable commitment to doing his job with excellence, precision, and dedication. Steve cared a lot about the things that mattered: a professional ethos that stressed the primacy of the patient, and where service, and intellectual and personal integrity are the foundations of what it means to be a doctor."
Your service and contributions to Providence were immeasurable, Dr. Salerno. We'll forever miss your inspiring leadership and humanity.
