A Split-Second Accident, A Remarkable Recovery

What started as a fun night riding in a golf cart with a friend quickly turned serious when 14-year-old Josiah fell from the vehicle and struck his head on the pavement.

He was taken to the emergency room at Covenant Children’s, where scans revealed a fractured skull and a brain bleed.

Josiah was admitted to the ICU so his condition could be closely monitored. Over the next several days, repeat CT scans showed the bleed was continuing to grow and had begun putting pressure on his brainstem. That’s when doctors determined emergency surgery was necessary.

Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Laszlo Nagy performed surgery to stop the bleeding and relieve the pressure on Josiah’s brain.

What happened next was nothing short of remarkable.

Less than a week after the accident—and just four days after brain surgery—Josiah was well enough to return home.

“We were told we were really blessed,” his mom shared. “A lot of kids don’t make it or aren’t the same after a golf cart injury.”

Throughout the experience, Josiah’s family leaned on their faith and the support of their care team.

“The team took really good care of my son and made us feel safe and secure,” his mom said. “Everyone was so friendly, from the emergency room through his discharge.”

Today, eight months later, Josiah is back to being an active teenager. He’s playing basketball, running track and enjoying the activities he loves. For his family, his recovery is a reminder of how quickly life can change—and how much there is to be grateful for.
