Just one week before his third birthday in March 2018, Zane Beyers and his family received news that would change their lives forever.
Zane was diagnosed with Pre-B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), an aggressive form of blood cancer that would require years of treatment and countless visits to Covenant Children's.
While much of his early treatment happened at a young age, Zane still remembers the people who cared for him throughout his journey.
“I remember having such good nurses and doctors taking care of me,” Zane said.
For his parents, the diagnosis was overwhelming. But throughout treatment, they found strength in their faith, their care team and the support of their community.
One group that rallied around the family in a special way was the stock show community. Today, Zane loves participating in stock shows, but long before he was able to return to the activities he enjoys, fellow exhibitors, families and supporters stood beside him during some of his most difficult days.
“Just knowing those people truly cared about him and knowing the prayers that were being said over him and over our family was incredibly meaningful,” said his mother, Moriah Beyers.
At the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, families and children wore hats, bracelets and shirts in support of Zane, reminding the Beyers family that they were not facing the journey alone.
After years of treatment, appointments and perseverance, Zane reached a milestone his family had long been waiting for.
On June 8, 2021, he rang the bell, marking the completion of his cancer treatment.
Today, Zane is an active 11-year-old who enjoys many of the same things as his peers, including football, baseball and stock shows. While cancer was a chapter of his childhood, it is not what defines him.
His journey, however, has given him a unique perspective and a deep appreciation for the people who stood beside him along the way.
For the Beyers family, Zane's story is a reminder of the power of community, the importance of hope and the impact compassionate care can have on a child's life.
Today, they celebrate not only how far Zane has come, but all the possibilities that lie ahead.
