A New Chapter Begins at Covenant Children’s

June 23, 2026 Lauren Jackson

Young patients at Covenant Children's now have a new way to access books, thanks to a donation from Atmos Energy.

The new book-vending machine, located in the hospital's lobby, provides children and families with free books designed to encourage reading and support literacy development.

"We are committed to improving early childhood literacy success for students in Lubbock and the communities where our employees live and work," said Hantz, public affairs manager for Atmos Energy. "Atmos Energy is honored to donate a book-vending machine to Covenant Children's and provide children with a unique reading incentive."

The machine will serve patients and families from across West Texas and eastern New Mexico, helping make books more accessible during a hospital stay.

"Reading opens the door to a lifetime of learning and helps children better understand the world around them," said Jessica Marlar, senior philanthropy officer at Covenant Children's. "We are proud to be part of a meaningful community partnership that invests in literacy, children and their future."

The donation reflects a shared commitment between Covenant Children's and Atmos Energy to support children beyond their medical care. By increasing access to books and encouraging reading at an early age, the partnership creates opportunities for learning, imagination and growth.

Covenant Children's celebrated the addition of the book-vending machine with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in May, marking the beginning of a new resource for young readers throughout the region.
