About the Presentation
This session explores how impairment is defined, identified, and ethically managed in healthcare professionals, using the Washington Physicians Health Program (WPHP) as a model for balancing patient safety with confidential, rehabilitative support. It distinguishes illness from impairment, reviews legal reporting obligations, and examines individual and cultural barriers that delay intervention. Special attention is given to the special needs, challenges, and rewards of working with healthcare professionals. Program outcomes will be presented, demonstrating high rates of illness remission, as well as program satisfaction and impact experienced by WPHP participants and stakeholders.
