Meet Dr. Stevens: A Hospitalist Rooted in Service and Community

March 17, 2026

Dr. William “Alex” Stevens serves as a hospitalist at Providence Centralia Hospital and Providence St. Peter Hospital. He is also the current Medical Staff President at Centralia Hospital A veteran, father and physician, he credits his years in uniform for shaping how he practices today. “My path through military medicine shaped who I am as a physician. Service has always been at the core of my work,” he said.

Dr. Stevens grew up in the suburbs of Las Vegas and first saw health care through his mother, a first generation Filipino-American and nurse. He attended medical school in Reno, Nev., and entered the Army on a medical scholarship. His residency at Madigan on Fort Lewis brought him to the Pacific Northwest for the first time. After a military assignment on the East Coast, he returned to Washington and joined Providence in 2020. “Coming back to the Northwest felt like coming home — this is where I want to be, and this is where I want to practice,” he said.

Trained in family medicine, Dr. Stevens was drawn to inpatient care during residency. Hospital medicine offered what he valued most: complex cases, quick decisions and the ability to see improvement in hours or days. “What drew me to hospital medicine was the complexity — the chance to think deeply and act quickly for patients who need us most,” he said.

Hospitalists are the physicians who care for patients during their hospital stay. As medicine has grown more complex, hospitalists help coordinate treatment with nurses, specialists and primary care providers. Dr. Stevens splits his time between Centralia and St. Peter hospitals to support system needs and ensure continuity of care.

Dr. Stevens believes quality care means seeing the human behind the diagnosis. “Quality care isn’t just about treating a disease. It’s about understanding the whole person and helping them feel seen and supported,” he said. That approach aligns with Providence’s Mission and the closeknit culture at Centralia, where teams work closely with Providence St. Peter and Providence Swedish to keep care local whenever possible.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Stevens spends time outdoors with his family. He enjoys backpacking and camping and is preparing to take his youngest child on his first backpacking trip. He is also a runner who has completed two half marathons and plans another. Whether solving a complex medical case or helping a patient feel understood during a difficult time, Dr. Stevens brings heart, skill and a spirit of service to every shift. Providence is proud to have him caring for our communities.
