Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center earns national recognition for excellence by Healthgrades

Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, which earned national awards for patient safety excellence the past two years, received more accolades this week for high performance in three areas: vascular, gastrointestinal and critical care.

Along with the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for 2022 and 2023, this week the Burbank hospital earned five stars for carotid procedures, five stars for colorectal surgeries and, for the 11th year in a row, five stars for the treatment of sepsis, a potentially deadly infection.

The Patient Safety Excellence Award is granted to the top 10% of hospitals nationwide. Hospitals that qualify for this award have shown notable success in avoiding falls, surgical complications, bed sores and hospital-acquired infections, according to Healthgrades, a leading website that links patients to health care.

Karl Keeler, chief executive for Providence Saint Joseph, credited the commitment across Providence to adopt a culture of “high reliability” that has influenced efforts to recognize that health care workers’ greatest responsibility is the safety of patients and one another.

“Safety is crucial to excellent patient and employee care, and is our top priority,” Keeler said. “We’re gratified to be among the nation’s safest hospitals, and I thank our physicians, clinical staff and our service workers for their vigilance in protecting our patients, our visitors and one another.”

Healthgrades, a leading consumer health website, evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and complications. By focusing on what matters most, patient outcomes, the Healthgrades ratings provide critical feedback for both patients and hospitals.

By offering easy access to objective performance measures, Healthgrades gives consumers the information they need to find a hospital that excels in providing the care they need. And, by shining a light on strengths and weaknesses, the Healthgrades ratings help direct hospitals to opportunities for clinical improvement.
