Planned enhancements to radiation therapy in South Puget Sound

November 4, 2026 Providence News Team

Providence Swedish Cancer Institute remains committed to ensuring patients in South Puget Sound have access to comprehensive, high-quality cancer care close to home. The Lacey clinic currently serves more than 9,100 patients annually and supports approximately 82,000 patient visits each year, reflecting both the growing demand for oncology services and the critical role the clinic plays in regional cancer care delivery.

Radiation oncology services in Lacey are anchored by a fully operational Linear Accelerator (LinAc), which provides precise, targeted radiation treatment for a broad range of cancers. This technology enables clinicians to effectively treat malignant tissue while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy structures. Maintaining these services locally is an important benefit for patients, reducing the need to travel outside the South Puget Sound region for radiation treatments.

To further enhance care capabilities, Providence Swedish is planning an upgrade to the next generation of LinAc technology. While the current system continues to provide reliable and effective treatment, newer platforms offer advancements that can improve treatment precision, support additional therapeutic options, further reduce dose exposure to healthy tissue and enhance overall patient experience.

As planning for this technology enhancement continues, it is important to note that comprehensive radiation therapy services remain fully available in Lacey today. The existing LinAc continues to play a vital role in meeting the needs of patients across the region and ensuring uninterrupted access to evidence-based cancer treatment.

The combination of current radiation oncology capabilities and planned technology investments reflects Providence Swedish Cancer Institute's ongoing commitment to delivering advanced cancer care, expanding access and supporting positive patient outcomes throughout South Puget Sound.
