SOUTH PUGET SOUND — Early Progressive Mobility (EPM) aims to promote the utilization of mobilization and ambulation techniques to help patients progress back to their functional baseline from the beginning of their hospitalization to the time of discharge. EPM is an evidence-based intervention that directly correlates with a decrease in patient length of stay.

The EPM initiative is centered around utilizing the Johns Hopkins-Highest Level of Mobility (JH-HLM) scale as our standard mobility assessment tool. This scale has been selected for its effectiveness in standardizing the recording and communication of patient mobility levels. The scale is intended to document the highest level of mobility observed by caregivers during each shift. This program requires the active participation of Registered Nurses (RNs) and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) in assisting and encouraging patient mobility.
