This prestigious accolade from the National Rural Health Association's (NRHA) recognizes Dr. Achterman's remarkable contributions to rural healthcare and her unwavering commitment to her patients and community.
As a family medicine and obstetrics trained physician, Dr. Achterman serves a vital role in Grays Harbor County, a region with over 70,000 residents through her work at Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma. Within this community, she stands as one of fewer than 20 family medicine providers, fewer than two fluent Spanish-speaking providers, and fewer than four obstetrics providers. Her unique skills and dedication ensure that her patients receive comprehensive and culturally competent care, addressing critical gaps in healthcare access. Dr. Achterman's journey in medicine began with her education at the Providence St. Peter Family Medicine Residency Program, where she honed her expertise and passion for family medicine. Her leadership at both Summit Pacific and at Providence St. Peter has led to significant advancements in faculty development, prenatal care delivery, and perinatal oversight and quality, leaving a lasting impact on her colleagues and patients.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Achterman is an advocate for rural health. She actively engages in initiatives to improve healthcare delivery and access in her community, inspiring others in the medical field to join her in making a difference. Her ability to speak fluent Spanish allows her to break barriers and create a welcoming environment for Spanish-speaking patients, further exemplifying her dedication to inclusive care.
