Facey Medical Group Presents 2019 Yvonne Wiggins Memorial Scholarship Awards

August 22, 2019 Facey Communications Team

On Wednesday, May 15, 2019, Facey Medical Group President Roscoe Marter, M.D. and Facey Medical Foundation Board Member Pat Horanberg, RN presented four $1000 scholarships from the Yvonne D. Wiggins R.N. Memorial Scholarship Endowment to students enrolled in the nursing program at College of the Canyons (COC) as part of the school's annual scholarship awards reception.

The Yvonne D. Wiggins R.N. Memorial Scholarship Endowment at COC was established in May 2008 by Facey Medical Group and Facey Medical Foundation in memory of Yvonne Wiggins, a Facey nurse and COC nursing alumna. Yvonne played an instrumental role in the growth of Facey's staff education and Quality Management programs for thirteen years before losing her battle with cancer in late 2007 at the age of 53. In addition to her work with Facey, she was also involved with the development of COC's Nursing Program and the Northridge Hospital Medical Center Nursing Leadership Program.

Scholarships are awarded to College of the Canyons second-semester nursing students who demonstrate financial need and academic merit. This year's recipients were: Christine Beck, Maria Dionora, Ginger Sullivan, and Margarita Vassyunina:

"The physicians and staff at Facey were lucky to have Yvonne as a colleague," said Dr. Marter at the event. "Educating the nurses of tomorrow was a vital part of her commitment to providing exceptional care."

Since its establishment, Facey has gathered $43,205.00 in donations and contributions for the endowment. This relatively small endowment generates modest scholarships and is sustained primarily through contributions from Facey Medical Group and its employees. In 2018, the endowment awarded two $2,000.00 scholarships. Dr. Marter noted that though it is primarily funded by Facey, anyone can make a tax-deductible donation to the endowment and help sustain the scholarship endowment's mission.

"Our community needs more well-trained nurses and many of us would like to see Yvonne’s legacy of care and dedication perpetuated," he said. "That's why we encourage our entire Facey family to help sustain this program and lift up those who one day may very well be called upon to care for us one day."

Interested donors can complete and return a donation form or contact Anna-Lizza Ortiz for more information.
