Providence St. Joseph Hospital of Orange announced it received the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care, indicating that the hospital meets the highest national standards for safety and quality of care for mothers and babies. Providence St. Joseph is one of just 20 hospitals nationwide and the first in the Providence health system to receive the certification.

“We are thrilled our Women's and Children's team has received well deserved recognition from The Joint Commission for their commitment to providing excellent maternity care,” said Chief Nursing Officer Michelle Genova, DNP, RN, NEA-BC at Providence St. Joseph Hospital. “This prestigious certification highlights the dedication of our team to the health and well-being of women and newborns in our community and recognizes the hard work, expertise, and commitment of our dedicated physicians and caregivers.”

To receive the certification, the Women’s Services team underwent a rigorous onsite review in which it was evaluated for its compliance with standardized care around identification of maternal mental health needs, risk evaluation of socioeconomic factors that can impact outcomes, and standardization of care for high-risk maternal conditions like elevated blood pressure and postpartum hemorrhage. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

“Our Level IV Regional Perinatal Center offers the most advanced medical and surgical care including 24-hour, onsite OB-GYN hospitalists, the latest technology and Magnet-certified nurses to manage high-risk pregnancies, childbirth and postpartum recovery,” said Brian Helleland, Chief Executive at Providence St. Joseph Hospital. “This certification affirms our commitment to a safe, world-class comprehensive program and extraordinary experience.”

“Advanced Certification in Perinatal Care recognizes health care organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” said Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations and chief nursing officer, The Joint Commission. “We commend Providence St. Joseph Hospital for using The Joint Commission certification process to reduce variation in clinical processes and to strengthen its clinical program to drive safer, higher quality and more compassionate care for individuals served.”
