2018 chair recognized for legacy of leadership protecting Alaska's poor and vulnerable
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Past board chair of Providence Alaska Foundation Scott Habberstad has been acknowledged by his colleagues for his efforts to improve the lives of Alaskans, particularly those who are poor and vulnerable. The board unanimously supported a motion last week to name him as board member emeritus of the foundation.
The distinction acknowledges the enthusiasm, energy and passion he brought to the board and foundation through his five years of service, during which he participated on every committee and served as 2018 chair.
Habberstad's accomplishments last year include leading the effort to secure 89 percent of the funding needed to advance construction of Alaska CARES, an outpatient clinic that provides evaluations and support services for children around the state experiencing physical and sexual abuse. Alaska CARES is part of a community collaboration that provides treatment in a facility where victim advocates, law enforcement, child protection, tribal health, forensic medicine and mental health professionals are located under one roof so they can work together to help victims. Construction of the $12.85 million facility started in April of 2018, and it is scheduled to open in April 2019.
Habberstad’s year as chair also included major milestone celebrations for other programs receiving community support through the foundation, such as The Children's Hospital at Providence at 20 years of service and Providence Cancer Center at 10 years of service.
“Through the community partnerships he has built as a life-long Alaskan from Ketchikan and in his professional role at Alaska Airlines, Scott brought attention to the issues faced by poor and vulnerable Alaskans and helped garner the resources needed to help them heal and thrive,” says Stacy Barnes, 2019 chair of the Providence Alaska Foundation Board of Directors. "This action by the board acknowledges Scott's impact and the legacy of his contributions.”
Habberstad will continue to serve as a voting member on the board of Providence Alaska Foundation in his role as immediate past chair in 2019 and will assume the title of emeritus in 2020.
