Patients seeking emergency care at Providence Portland Medical Center will now benefit from additional treatment space, enhanced patient-centered care areas and improvements designed to create a better experience during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Recently, Providence Portland Medical Center celebrated the completion of its emergency department expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing the donors, caregivers, trustees and community supporters whose generosity made the project possible.

More than 650 donors contributed to the effort, helping raise $36.5 million toward the project as part of the Providence Oregon Foundation’s Tomorrow Starts Today Campaign.

Expanding access when it matters most

The newly completed expansion adds 27 treatment rooms, increasing the emergency department’s capacity to 79 treatment spaces. These additions will help Providence Portland care for more patients efficiently while reducing strain on emergency services and improving access to timely care.

For patients and families facing unexpected health concerns, increased capacity can mean shorter waits and faster access to the medical attention they need.

Designed with patients and caregivers in mind

The renovation also includes a larger stabilization and recovery area for patients experiencing acute intoxication or substance withdrawal. The expanded space was created to provide a calmer, safer and more supportive environment for both patients and care teams.

Emergency department caregivers played an important role in shaping the design of the renovated space. New features include 20 flexible care rooms, a pending results room and a consultation room, helping patients receive care in settings that support privacy, communication and comfort.

Additional improvements include a redesigned ambulance entrance, new caregiver locker rooms and break areas, seven nursing stations and enhanced translation technology. Together, these enhancements help create a more seamless experience for patients while supporting caregivers in delivering high-quality, compassionate care.
