A new chapter in heart care: Providence St. Vincent opens first redesigned electrophysiology lab

March 2026

After nearly a year of construction, Providence St. Vincent Medical Center has opened the first of three newly redesigned electrophysiology (EP) labs — a milestone in the hospital’s vision to expand and modernize cardiac care.

The upgraded space is intentionally designed to support comfort, clarity and confidence for every patient who enters.

Built with caregivers, for patients

Typically, these labs function as places where a cardiologist can diagnose and treat heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias) using advanced catheter technology. Our new labs are larger, more modern procedure rooms with cutting-edge technology including a bi-plane system – two sets of X-ray sources for more comprehensive imaging.

At the heart of the design process were the caregivers who use these rooms every day.

Cardiac catheter lab and EP nurse manager Harley Anderson, RN, shared how deeply involved the team was from the beginning.

“We were consulted on every aspect of the room layouts and the strategic placement of equipment,” Harley says.

“In fact, during the early stages, we set up mock rooms and had our staff spend time in those spaces, actively helping to determine the most functional and efficient layouts. This hands-on approach really allowed us to tailor the environment to best support both our workflow and the needs of our patients.”

Technology that protects and empowers

Each new lab features state‑of‑the‑art fluoroscopy machines that reduce radiation exposure for patients, physicians and caregivers, significantly improving safety. The equipment also produces clearer, more detailed imaging, empowering care teams to work with greater speed and accuracy.

These improvements translate to safer procedures, more personalized treatment, and stronger outcomes for the patients who trust Providence with their heart health.

Investing in the future of cardiovascular care

The EP lab is just one part of a larger cardiovascular expansion project scheduled for completion in spring 2028. This long‑term investment ensures that our caregivers can continue to provide patients across Oregon with seamless access to advanced heart care — now and for years to come.
