Author: Breanne Brown, D.O., CAQSM, FAAFP, medical director, Providence Sports Medicine
Providence Sports Medicine offers a full range of services to support and extend our patients’ athletic journeys, including injections to treat pain and inflammation. Our medical team includes physicians and physical therapists, all of whom are trained to help prevent and treat sports injuries.
We see a lot of repetitive injuries, such as those related to bursitis, tendinitis, sprains, strains and tears, joint injuries and chronic/overuse injuries. We also treat patients with sudden, acute sports-related injuries, such as torn muscles, ruptured tendons, and fractures.
Sports medicine injections
Sometimes the tried-and-true RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) and over-the-counter medications don’t adequately resolve persistent sports-related pain.
Injections can be very effective in delivering a high dose of medication directly to an inflamed area vs. oral or IV medications.
Providence Sports Medicine provides injection options, such as cortisone, hyaluronic acid (Synvisc), platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and prolotherapy.
- Cortisone injections are delivered to joints, including those in the hip, knee, shoulder or wrist, to tamp down inflammation and pain – with the goal of getting people back to their everyday activities.
- Hyaluronic acid (Synvisc) injections are used mostly with arthritis to keep joints moving and to reduce pain, especially when other treatments haven't worked. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found inside many joints in the body’s synovial fluid.
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses injections of a concentration of a patient's own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints.
- Prolotherapy is an injection treatment used to relieve pain. Usually dextrose is injected into a patient’s body to help jumpstart the body’s natural healing abilities.
Other services
In addition to offering injections for patients who would benefit from them, Providence Sports Medicine provides a wide range of services to help patients stay active and healthy. Our providers and physical therapists are trained in sports medicine and can design a customized rehabilitation program that includes exercise and other types of therapy to help patients recover and safely resume sports and exercise.
Whether your patients have a sudden injury or one that has developed over time while doing a sport or activity, Providence Sports Medicine experts can help them feel better and improve their healthy exercise regimen.
In addition to serving as medical director for Providence Sports Medicine, Dr. Brown is the head team physician for the Portland Thorns women's soccer team.
