ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Providence Health & Services Alaska (PH&SA) caregivers are taking part in a fundraising campaign to help local food banks.

Caregivers have been asked to consider making a small donation to the Providence Alaska Foundation. Each donation will be matched by PH&SA, up to the first $50,000 in donations — $20,000 for food banks in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley, and $10,000 each to food banks in Kodiak Island, Valdez and Seward. Local food banks will receive 100% of the gift.

Community members interested in donating can do so by visiting bit.ly/3pFwsIU.

“As the pandemic has increased, so has the number of people who are now unemployed and the need to help people during this difficult time,” said Preston M. Simmons, DSc, FACHE, PH&SA chief executive. “Our goal to help those in need during the Thanksgiving holidays and demonstrate our gratitude to our communities.”

Providence conducted a similar fundraising event in the spring. During that campaign, more than $35,970 was donated to help families in need. With the Providence match, a total $69,161.17 was distributed to four food banks: $38,316.15 to Anchorage; $3,599.42 to Kodiak Island; $19,764.22 to Seward; and $4,122.46. Additional funds that were donated without a designated community were distributed to the Food Bank of Alaska.

“We hope to duplicate the success of our earlier campaign so our food banks will have funds available to purchase the kind of nutritious foods most needed by families right now,” Simmons added. “We hope we can help make a difference.”

The campaign ends on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26.
