Learn how Providence CORE partnered with the community-based nonprofit Todos Juntos to translate existing program, survey, and narrative data into a compelling story of impact.

The Clackamas County, Oregon-based nonprofit Todos Juntos has grown significantly over its 25-year history. Today, it reaches over 2000 rural students and families annually through after-school programs and other community-based initiatives.

Yet as it has grown, Todos Juntos leaders have sought to strengthen their ability to use data to tell the organization’s story. And to demonstrate its impact.

A partnership with the Providence Center for Outcomes Research & Education (CORE) helped Todos Juntos achieve that by using data the organization was already gathering to tell its data story in the organization's inaugural annual impact report.

From data collection to data storytelling

CORE first connected with Todos Juntos through CORE’s Data for Change program. Data for Change provides data-related support to nonprofit grantees of Providence Oregon Community Health.

As CORE research scientist Sarah Roth explains, “Like many of the small and mid-sized nonprofits we’ve worked with through Data for Change, Todos Juntos was already collecting client feedback and other data to meet their funders’ reporting requirements. The real issue was capacity. Meaning, having the time and ability to use that data to paint a more complete picture of the organization's impact."

Building on their Data for Change experience, Todos Juntos partnered with CORE to develop an annual impact report with stories, data, and information for funders, partners, and community members.

“Data for Change inspired us to think more deeply about how we could leverage the data and stories we already have to quantify our impact,” says Shawna Johnson, Director of Early Learning and Operations at Todos Juntos. “The CORE team has been instrumental in helping us identify, evaluate, and structure that data into our inaugural Impact Report.”

Making meaning out of disparate data

For Todos Juntos and other organizations like it, the challenge isn’t necessarily a lack of data; It’s having the capacity to weave together the data they have and showcase it in a way that tells a cohesive story of impact.

“The goal is to move beyond reporting for individual funders and instead create a fuller picture of impact,” explains Roth.

Together, CORE and Todos Juntos used parent surveys, data from school district partners, grant reporting, and other data to highlight both the scale of Todos Juntos’ work and the experiences behind it.

The result is an impact report that helps Todos Juntos communicate its value more effectively while laying the groundwork for stronger data storytelling in the future.
