St. Joseph Fund develops Disaster Relief and Resilience Framework to expedite emergency response

St. Joseph Fund’s disaster relief and resilience grantmaking strategy prioritizes support for immediate relief, long-term recovery and preparedness efforts for low-income populations.

Since its inception in 1986, the St. Joseph Fund (SJF) has focused on disaster relief grantmaking. Acting on behalf of the Providence family of organizations, SJF provides urgent relief to areas hit by natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, epidemics and human-caused crises like conflicts and wars. These events cause widespread damage, resulting in loss of life, infrastructure destruction, economic hardships and increased vulnerability in communities that are typically already at risk.

SJF's disaster relief and resilience grantmaking strategy prioritizes support for immediate relief, long-term recovery and preparedness efforts for low-income populations. Recognizing the growing frequency and severity of disasters worldwide, SJF established partnerships with three trusted U.S.-based nonprofits with regional and global response capabilities to expedite aid distribution.

SJF partners with Catholic Relief Services, Center for Disaster Philanthropy and Catholic Charities USA by providing unrestricted grants, which enables them to quickly respond, no matter when an emergency strikes. This approach allows partners to respond swiftly, innovate solutions, leverage additional resources and maintain a sustained presence in vulnerable communities.

As partners in disaster relief and resilience, SJF intends to impact its partners' infrastructure and the broader humanitarian aid landscape. SJF aims to be the "first funder in" during emergencies, facilitating resource mobilization from other donors and institutions.
