When the unexpected happens, preparation makes all the difference.
In March, caregivers from across Providence gathered to strengthen their ability to respond safely during complex emergency situations.
Training for high‑risk scenarios
Caregivers participated in a two‑day Hospital Emergency Response Team (HERT) recruitment and training held March 17–18.
The hands‑on experience focused on disaster preparedness and coordinated response during emergencies involving chemical, biological, radiological or explosive materials.
These scenarios require quick thinking, clear communication and seamless teamwork — all essential to protecting patients, visitors and caregivers alike.
A team approach to safety
Participants represented a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical roles, reflecting the diverse expertise needed during a crisis. Training emphasized knowing your role, trusting your team and communicating clearly.
Caregivers also completed Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Incident Command System training, including ICS‑100, ICS‑200 and ICS‑700, which provide a standardized framework for managing emergencies. Emergency management staff were available throughout the training to offer guidance and support.
Prepared to care, even in crisis
HERT plays a vital role in ensuring hospitals are ready to respond when it matters most. Trainings like this help caregivers build confidence, strengthen coordination and stay prepared to deliver care with clarity and compassion — even in the most challenging circumstances.
