Nationally recognized care for stroke and other brain health needs are available in the South Bay.
Leading-edge neuroscience care is available in the South Bay. Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance is one of the highest-volume neurosurgery centers in Los Angeles County. It is among the top five hospitals in the county for brain surgeries. Neuroscience care at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers San Pedro and Torrance was transformed by a partnership with the nationally renowned Pacific Neuroscience Institute.
Both the San Pedro and Torrance hospitals are certified as Joint Commission–certified Stroke Centers. Providence Little Company of Mary serves the San Pedro community as a Primary Stroke Center and collaborates very closely with the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance. Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance is the only South Bay hospital to carry the distinction of Comprehensive Stroke Center from The Joint Commission.
“At Little Company of Mary Medical Centers, we have a comprehensive team of experts to care for the full spectrum of neurological disorders,” says Walavan Sivakumar, MD, a neurosurgeon and medical director for neurosurgery at Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance. “Our program includes specialists in neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, interventional neuroradiology, movement disorders and neurocritical care. In other words, our program provides comprehensive and complex care without patients having to leave our community.”
Dr. Sivakumar explains that the physicians of the Providence Neuroscience Clinical Institute—a Providence system-wide network of neuroscientists who oversee neuro services—work exclusively at Little Company of Mary Medical Centers, rather than having private practices and working at multiple hospitals. “That means our team of experts have dedicated themselves to building a first-class neuroscience program providing the highest level of care for our patients in the South Bay. We work incredibly hard and collaboratively on efforts such as quality improvement, research and implementing state-of-the-art technology.”
The exclusivity of the team also means that the same physicians will care for you throughout the duration of your neuroscience care or for any needs that arise. “Providence has demonstrated a complete commitment to neuroscience excellence,” says Dr. Sivakumar. This includes the addition of more staff, training and state-of-the-art technology and equipment.”
TOPS IN TECHNOLOGY
One example of the technology available to the physicians of the Providence Neuroscience Clinical Institute at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Centers is the O-arm surgical imaging system. This equipment allows neurosurgeons to have real-time imaging in the operating room.
“For our spine and cranial cases, we can do a CT scan on patients while they are in the OR. There’s no need to transport a vulnerable patient out of the OR for imaging,” says neurosurgeon Walavan Sivakumar.
