Providence Mission Hospital earns Magnet with Distinction™, marking a new milestone in nursing excellence

Providence Mission Hospital has earned Magnet with DistinctionTM recognition — the highest honor for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The designation marks the hospital’s fourth consecutive Magnet recognition and its first Magnet with DistinctionTM. Only about 1% of Magnet-recognized hospitals have achieved the “with Distinction” designation.

Magnet with DistinctionTM is reserved for organizations that demonstrate exceptional performance in nursing practice, leadership and patient outcomes. Providence Mission Hospital is among 10 hospitals in California — and one of four in Orange County — to achieve this designation. The ANCC introduced Magnet with DistinctionTM in 2023, and Mission Hospital earned it on its first evaluation since the designation became available.

“At Mission, nurses don’t just deliver care — they help lead how care is delivered,” said Jennifer Cord, DNP, MBA, RN, FACHE, NE-BC, chief nursing officer at Providence Mission Hospital. “Through shared governance and our unit-based councils, bedside nurses advance evidence-based practice, partner with leaders to review results, identify opportunities and implement changes that improve outcomes. Across inpatient, ambulatory and support services, our teams demonstrated pride in their work and a strong commitment to improving care hospital-wide.”

“Earning our fourth Magnet designation — and being recognized with Distinction — is a meaningful milestone for our hospital,” said Seth Teigen, chief executive, Providence Mission Hospital. “It reflects what our patients experience when they walk through our doors: excellence with heart, which is foundational to care at Mission. It also mirrors what our providers deliver every day — academic-level care in a community hospital setting — so patients can access leading-edge expertise close to home.”

Earning — and sustaining — Magnet designation is a rigorous process. Every four years, organizations submit detailed documentation, host an on-site evaluation and demonstrate ongoing improvements that meet or exceed ANCC standards. During the multi-day visit, Magnet appraisers assess areas such as professional practice, education, research, organizational structure and patient outcomes.

Research shows Magnet-recognized organizations often report higher nurse satisfaction and retention, along with stronger patient outcomes — such as broader adoption of safety practices, shorter hospital stays and lower mortality rates.

“Magnet with DistinctionTM is a powerful affirmation of the expertise and leadership of our nursing teams,” Cord said. “It reflects a culture that empowers nurses to lead, innovate and continuously improve the care we provide.”

Providence Mission Hospital is one of fewer than 100 hospitals nationwide to achieve Magnet® with Distinction. The hospital’s most recent Magnet designation was awarded in 2022 — one year before the ANCC introduced Magnet® with Distinction. Mission Hospital has earned numerous awards recognizing the quality of its care, including being named to Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 list. Mission Hospital joins Providence St. Joseph Hospital Orange and Providence St. Jude Medical Center as one of four hospitals in Orange County to earn this designation.
