Spokane, Wash. —Driven by its mission to meet the needs of the communities it serves, Providence Health Care has awarded $2.9 million dollars in grants and donations to more than 40 local organizations in Spokane and Stevens counties that play a critical role in creating healthier communities. The 2020 grant recipients were selected based on their ability to address an identified need or gap in services.

“With each community partnership we support, whether time, talent or treasure, we fulfill our Providence Mission in caring for our region’s most challenging health-related needs,” says Peg Currie, chief operating officer for Providence Health Care.  “Working together, we can improve access to mental care, homelessness, addiction, stable housing, and provide services to help families overcome traumatic circumstances.”

Providence conducts a Community Health Needs Assessment every three years in order to direct funding to areas where there is the greatest opportunity to make measurable and lasting improvements in the health of the communities it serves. The $2.9 million for grants and donations is a portion of Providence Health Care’s 2020 Community Benefit Fund.

Each year, in addition to community grants and donations, Providence Health Care directs its community benefit contributions to help cover the unpaid cost of Medicaid and other government programs, provide free and discounted care for patients who are uninsured or underinsured or otherwise unable to pay for their health care, provide funding for health-related education and research, and subsidize health services that fulfil a critical care need in the community. In 2018, the last year for which reporting has been completed, Providence Health Care’s total Community Benefit Fund was $143.8 million.
