PCS Time To Move

USFHP Marketing Team

Permanent Change of Station

The Defense Department is committed to helping service members and their families to master their move. Every military move is different. Wherever you are, wherever you’re headed, and whoever you’re bringing with you, find support and access benefits to help you get settled into your new home.

Moving across the country—or the world—can be both exciting and overwhelming. At US Family Health Plan Northwest, we know a successful PCS goes beyond shipping your belongings. Here’s how to prepare practically, emotionally, and medically for a smooth transition:

  1. Plan Ahead with Military OneSource

Before movers arrive, visit Plan My Move through Military OneSource to create a customized checklist. It will walk you through key tasks like scheduling household goods shipments, sorting documents, and planning travel, tailored to a CONUS or OCONUS assignment. Their free app and 24/7 helpline can also connect you to relocation assistance.

 2. Manage the Move Logistically

 ·         Pack smart: Label boxes by room and priority. Keep essentials (documents, medications, chargers) in carry-on bags.

·         Prepare your property shipment: Choose government or personally procured mover options, and handle customs paperwork if moving overseas.

·         Schedule delivery: Coordinate arrival windows with temporary housing or base lodging.

 3. Track Health and Benefits

Use the PCS to review your family’s health coverage:

·         Notify TRICARE and USFHPNW of your upcoming move to update your enrollment and provider network.

·         Refill any prescriptions before departure—especially essential medications covered by TRICARE Prime.

·         Familiarize yourself with nearest clinics or hospitals at your gaining station

 4. Support Mental & Family WellBeing

Frequent relocations, new schools, and deployment cycles can strain families. Military OneSource offers counseling, webinars, relocation podcasts, and financial consulting that many find invaluable. TRICARE-covered mental health benefits may also be available through your provider.

 5. Settle In Smoothly

Once you arrive:

·         Register with your new Primary Care Manager (PCM) under USFHPNW/TRICARE.

·         Attend base or community newcomer events to build social support.

·         Continue using Plan My Move tools—especially for follow-up needs like settling utilities or schools.

A PCS is more than just a move—it’s a fresh start. Let US Family Health Plan Northwest and TRICARE be part of your support system. With thoughtful planning, your next station can feel like home from day one.
