What is your risk factor for prostate cancer?

Studies show that one in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Are you wondering what your risk factor may be? “The cause of prostate cancer is multifactorial,” says Dr. Brian Norouzi, a urologist and robotic surgeon at Providence St. Joseph Hospital. “Risk factors include a genetic history, tobacco use, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, stress and exposure to toxin.”

While there is no template to follow to prevent prostate cancer, there are ways to lower your risk:

  • Limit sugar and processed foods and drinks.

  • Reduce consumption of red meat, fried foods and processed meats, such as bacon.

  • Increase levels of “good fats” found in olive oil, avocados and coconut oil.

  • Drink no or very little alcohol. “If you drink, have no more than one glass of red wine a night,” says Dr. Norouzi.

  • Eat more colorful fruits and veggies, preferably organic, as they have phytochemical and antioxidants that can prevent cancer.
