Providence releases 2025 Environmental Stewardship Annual Report

Report celebrates work toward carbon negativeincluding 27% reduction in carbon emissions from 2019 baseline

Providence today released its 2025 Environmental Stewardship Annual Report, highlighting continued progress working toward carbon negative by 2030 and underscoring the role environmental stewardship plays in building a healthier, more resilient future.

The report details work and achievements achieved across Providence’s environmental stewardship framework, including WE ACT  waste, energy and water, agriculture and food, chemicals and transportation  strengthening the climate resilience of our facilities (WE REACH) and advancing environmental advocacy and education (WE SHARE).

Building for today and tomorrow

“Considering environmental impacts in care delivery helps us protect our patients and preserve our communities in support of our vision of Health for a Better World,” said Ali Santore, chief external affairs officer, and Beth Schenk, chief environmental stewardship officer, in the report’s opening letter.

“By acting now, we deliver healthier outcomes, stronger communities and a more resilient healthcare system for years to come.”

Highlights of Providence’s 2025 environmental stewardship report include:

  • 51 Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards
  • 27% reduction in carbon emissions in 2025 compared to our 2019 baseline
  • 90% of hospitals deactivating the central supply delivery system for nitrous oxide
  • 57 sites completing LED retrofits to reduce emissions and costs
Protecting the planet while strengthening our future

While this work is rooted in our commitment to protect the planet and improve the health of our communities, the success of Providence’s environmental stewardship efforts also has generated marked cost savings that have supported the organization’s financial turnaround. As the health system navigates healthcare’s polycrisis, environmental stewardship is helping Providence reinvest in the work that advances our 2030 strategic direction:

  • Be the best place to give and receive care
  • Create the delivery model for the future
  • Drive focused innovation for positive change

Environmental stewardship supports these pillars by reducing harm, lowering costs and finding solutions to complex problems that negatively impact the communities we serve and beyond.

Embodying Pope Francis’ message

In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis reminds us that the Earth is not simply a resource to be managed, but a shared home entrusted to our care. His message calls for a proactive commitment to environmental health, human health and social justice.

“We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social,” Pope Francis writes, “but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and environmental.”

Aligned with our core value of justice, environmental stewardship at Providence embodies Pope Francis’ message as work of action, leadership and collaboration. This work is worth celebrating, but more so it’s worth sharing so we, together, can make the impact we wish to see.

About the Author

At Providence, we are called to care wisely for our people, our resources, and our earth. Further, Sisters of Providence that preceded us asked to be a model of good stewardship, so that we may demonstrate faithfulness to our values and that others may learn sound stewardship practices from us. The Providence Center for Environmental Stewardship is a virtual platform that serves as a central site to share many aspects of Providence’s Environmental Stewardship initiative. This includes the three pillars of our environmental stewardship initiative - WE ACT (mitigation), We REACH (adaptation & resilience), and We SHARE (advocacy & leadership).
