Recognizing signs of stroke can save a life

June 2026

When it comes to stroke, every second matters. Recognizing the warning signs early and seeking immediate care can make a life-changing difference in recovery and long term health.

Last month, Lisa Yanase, M.D., joined KATU’s AM Northwest to share an overview of stroke awareness, including how to recognize symptoms early and when to seek immediate care.

Dr. Yanase offered a gentle reminder of risk factors and urged patients to seek care quickly, following the B.E.F.A.S.T. acronym for recognizing key warning signs:

B — Balance: Sudden trouble with balance or coordination
E — Eyes: Sudden changes in vision, including double vision or loss of sight
F — Face: Facial drooping or uneven smile
A — Arms (or legs): Weakness or numbness, especially on one side of the body
S — Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty finding words
T — Time: “Time to call 911.”

Dr. Yanase is a stroke and critical care neurologist at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
