New Surgical Oncology Research Leader Announced

Providence Cancer Institute has announced Bryan Bell, D.D.S., M.D., is the new physician executive for surgical oncology research. In this role, Dr. Bell will provide administrative, surgical and scientific leadership to Providence’s surgical oncology research programs, help ensure the quality of clinical trials, and work with leaders and providers throughout Providence Cancer Institute, Earle A. Chiles Research Institute and Providence St. Joseph Health.

Dr. Bell received his medical degree at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and his dental degree at Creighton University. In addition to leading an outstanding group of practicing physicians in Head & Neck Associates, Dr. Bell has been serving as co-director of Providence Head and Neck Cancer Program and Clinic at Providence Cancer Institute and Earle A. Chiles Research Institute at the Robert W. Franz Cancer Center. He oversees a multidisciplinary team dedicated to patients with head and neck cancer.

Dr. Bell’s clinical activity, teaching and research has been devoted primarily to the comprehensive surgical management of patients with head and neck cancer. He has pioneered the use of virtual surgical planning in head and neck surgery and was one of the first surgeons on the U.S. west coast to perform transoral robotic surgery for the treatment of oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancer.

Since his recruitment as medical director in 2010, his research efforts have focused primarily on immunotherapy to enhance the effectiveness of surgery. Using his surgical practice to run phase I and phase II trials studying reversal of immunosuppression with monoclonal antibodies, Dr. Bell bridges basic, translational and clinical activities.

His work has resulted in over 150 scientific articles and book chapters, and he is co-editor of two major textbooks, including Oral, Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery. He has given more than 200 invited lectures, highlighting his clinical and research interests.

Dr. Bell has been appointed or elected to leadership positions in numerous professional societies, boards, foundations and committees, including the National Institutes of Health.  Among his many honors, Dr. Bell is a recipient of the William F. Harrigan Award for major contributions to surgery, an Honorary Professor of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery at Faculty of Health Sciences, Syddansk University, Odense, Denmark and was the 2019 Presidential Lecturer at the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Annual Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
