PROVIDENCE PRESIDENT MIKE BUTLER TO RETIRE
During his tenure, the Western U.S. health system grew to become one of the nation’s leading providers
RENTON, WASH. Sept. 15, 2020 – Providence, one of the largest health systems in the country, today announced that President Mike Butler will retire after 22 years of service and dedication to the not-for-profit organization.
“I’ve had the honor of serving with Mike for the last nine years and am grateful for his partnership,” said Rod Hochman, M.D., president and CEO. “After more than two decades of service, he’s proud of the team we’ve built and is confident he can hand the reins over to the next generation of Providence leaders.”
During Butler’s tenure, Providence grew from $2 billion in revenue annually to $25 billion, serving more people in need year over year. Butler helped architect a contiguous growth strategy that allowed Providence to build connected networks of care across the Western U.S. His commitment to delivering health care across scale helped pave the way for clinical improvements, innovation and affordability.
He also helped advance key strategies around population health, digital innovation, clinical institutes, ambulatory care, medical groups and revenue diversification. A servant leader, Butler is deeply and personally aligned with the Mission of Providence. His legacy includes spearheading a commitment to ending homelessness in the Western U.S. and leading international service trips to Guatemala.
“I am proud that our reach has expanded to touch more than 24 million people in the communities we serve,” Butler said. “I know our next generation of leaders will deliver on our vision of health for a better world, giving every person in every community we serve the opportunity to affordably and predictably live their life to its fullest – mind, body and spirit.”
Butler’s last day is Wednesday, Sept. 30. Providence will announce a future leadership structure later this year.
