Around the world robots and telehealth technologies are being utilized to increase capacity and elevate risk for human workers as we tackle the coronavirus. It isn’t uncommon to hear apprehension or resentment over the increased automation of labor but the pandemic is showing how humans and technology can work together to keep workers safe and save lives.
Dr. Todd Czartoski, chief medical technology officer, said teams of care providers had been practicing and developing protocols to treat highly infectious patients since the 2014 Ebola outbreak. He notes that technology has not replaced in-person care, but it has reduced the number of times the medical staff need to enter patients’ rooms, meaning they could conserve personal protective equipment.
