RENTON, Wash. [April 10, 2026] — Providence, a not-for-profit health system serving the Western U.S., today announced that Stephen Taluja has been named its new chief mission officer. The move comes on the heels of a national search and will take effect on June 29.
Taluja currently serves as chief sponsorship and formation officer for Bon Secours Mercy Health. He brings deep expertise in Catholic health care, mission integration, sponsorship, ministry formation, cannon law and ethics with a proven record of guiding values-based transformation across complex health systems.
“Providence is delighted to welcome Stephen Taluja as our new chief mission officer. Advancing and sustaining our Mission and faith-based values is at the core of our purpose at Providence,” said Erik Wexler, Providence president and CEO. “Stephen’s background in Catholic health care, and his thoughtful approach to managing change, makes him the perfect fit for this role.”
Taluja will be responsible for Providence’s Mission and formation, spiritual health, and ethics. He also will serve as the liaison with the Providence St. Joseph Health Sponsors Council.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside Providence’s caregivers, sponsors and leaders who live the Mission every day,” said Taluja. “I look forward to helping continue to strengthen Mission formation, spiritual health and ethical leadership in service of the communities that trust Providence with their care today and for decades to come.”
“The chief mission officer is a critical leadership role for Providence. Like all health care organizations, Providence is navigating transformation,” said Wexler. “Stephen will be key to ensuring alignment among our Mission, values and strategic organizational objectives to help ensure that we have fidelity with what we are called to do as we foster a culture of innovation and transformation.”
Taluja held several positions at Bon Secours Mercy Health, first starting there in 2014. Prior to joining Bon Secours Mercy Health, he led multicultural parish ministries in New York, Chicago and Peru delivering spiritual care in hospitals, prisons, parishes and universities.
Taluja earned his B.A. in religious studies from St. Xavier University, MDiv and M.A. in theology from Catholic Theological Union, and an MBA from the University of Baltimore and Towson University. He also received a JCL/M.A. in cannon law from St. Paul University, Ottawa.
