Finding Hope and Purpose Following a Stroke

February 24, 2020 Providence News Team

The aftermath of a stroke can be a challenging and emotional time for stroke survivors. While a stroke can cause movement, speech, vision and cognitive impairments, it can also lead to behavioral and emotional changes. Some may have the feeling that they’ve lost their independence and might mourn their lives prior to a stroke. Feelings of frustration, anger, depression and anxiety are also common, and these intense emotions can take an emotional and physical toll.

Fortunately, these feelings are all completely normal, and many disabilities and emotional challenges tend to improve with time. A strong support system consisting of loved ones, family, friends, therapy, church and support groups (to name a few) are critical elements to recovery following a stroke.

The warmth, acceptance and emotional support from our support group can often be the key to uncovering hidden strengths.

support-group-1The Stroke Support Group of South Orange County at Mission Hospital, a program of the Mission Neuroscience Institute, provides a safe forum for stroke survivors and loved ones to build and create meaningful lives after a stroke. Each stroke survivor faces a unique set of physical and emotional challenges, and each copes in their own way. The warmth, acceptance and emotional support from our support group can often be the key to uncovering hidden strengths.

Stroke survivors share their personal journeys, offer advice for moving forward and most importantly, offer support and friendship. The individuals in this incredibly special group truly embody our promise to “know, care for, and ease the way” for every single person they encounter.
