Providence chief clinical executive to be inducted as American Organization of Nurse Leadership fellow
Dr. Sylvain Trepanier noted for advancing nursing
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (Feb. 17, 2020) – Sylvain Trepanier, DNP, RN, CENP, FAAN, an experienced nurse executive committed to advancing nurse practice, will be inducted into the American Organization for Nursing Leadership fellow designation program.
Trepanier, group vice president and chief clinical executive for Providence Southern California, is among nine colleagues from across the nation who will be inducted into the fellowship March 20 at AONL’s annual conference in Nashville, Tenn.
The AONL fellow designation recognizes nurse leaders’ sustained contributions to nursing leadership, commitment to service and influence in shaping health care.
“Syl is an exceptional leader and a champion for the advancement of nurse leadership, influence, innovation and research with the singular goal of improving patient care,” said Erik G. Wexler, chief executive, Providence Southern California. “We congratulate him and thank him for his inspiration as he takes our ministry of healing to the next level.”
Trepanier was recognized by AONL in part for his support of a residency program for new graduate nurses, who often have difficulty getting that first position in acute-care hospitals. Providence is committed to hiring “new grads” who work with experienced nurses to transition into practice. He also is credited with fostering collaboration among nurses across all disciplines and engaging them with their colleagues throughout the 13 hospitals and affiliated hospitals that comprise Providence in Los Angeles and Orange counties and the High Desert.
“We work together on our top priorities, which include quality improvement projects as well as research to improve the care experience,” he said. One of his goals is to help guide hospitals through the process of attaining Magnet Hospital status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Just 6 percent of the nation’s hospitals have achieved the quality designation, including seven of the 13 hospitals Trepanier oversees. The remaining hospitals are working toward the designation.
He believes strongly in mentoring nurse leaders and being mentored. His position is a non-conventional executive role that supports clinical practice across disciplines in the Southern California Region – quality, medicine, nursing, cinical operations, service lnes (Clinical Institutes,) infection prevention, care management and clinical education.
Trepanier notes the World Health Organization declared 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, a global effort to highlight the acute shortage of health workers. The declaration, he said, spotlights the importance of nurse leadership in attracting, nurturing and helping the professional development of nurses new to the field.
With more than 30 years of nurse experience, Trepanier has worked in a wide range of specialties, enhancing his abilities to oversee the sprawling Southern California region, which employs approximately 33,000. He earned his doctorate in nursing practice in 2011 and came to Providence three years ago as regional chief nursing officer.
An AONL member since 2007, he has worked with nurses to shape healthcare through innovative and expert nursing leadership. He aspires to meet AONL’s priorities: to lead and influence the healthcare workforce; to advance and promote affordable, value-based healthcare; and to strengthen AONL’s voice through a highly engaged inclusive and diverse membership.
