Free Retreats for Families Coping with Cancer

May 14, 2014 Providence Regional Cancer System Southwest Washington

Harmony Hill Retreat Center, Union, WashingtonTo transform the lives of those affected with cancer. That’s the goal of the free programs offered at Harmony Hill Retreat Center in Union, Washington. Participants achieve this goal of transformation with the guidance of professional care providers, who help them change stories about cancer as a disease into stories of psychological healing and finding joy and meaning in each day.

These three-day retreats were created in response to a clear and unmet need: to help both children and their parents – one or both of whom may have a cancer diagnosis – cope with the many emotional and psychological aspects of that diagnosis.

These retreats allow in-depth, high-quality support. They focus on individual and family needs as they relate to parents and children ages 6-18. This customized program, based on Harmony Hill’s extended cancer retreat model, provides specific tools and resources for parents and children affected by a parental cancer diagnosis.

The retreats are offered during the summer and feature facilitated support group time, guided imagery, art, music, movement, fun outdoor activities and free time. Participant families leave with tools and resources to empower them on their cancer journey.

This year, family retreats are scheduled for June 6-8 and August 6-8. Space is still open for both sessions. There is no charge. Registration is required.

For more information or to register, visit the retreat website or call Victrinia at (360) 898-2363.

Harmony Hill Retreat Center is located in Union, Washington, approximately 45 minutes north of Olympia. It’s a one-hour drive from Tacoma and two hours from Seattle.

Harmony Hill began with Gretchen Schodde’s dream: to create a retreat center where people could experience renewal and deep well-being. In 1986, Harmony Hill opened its doors as a small nonprofit retreat facility focusing on wellness. In 1994, Harmony Hill added its Cancer Program. The heart of its mission: to provide support for those affected by a cancer diagnosis – including caregivers and health professionals.

Today, Harmony Hill’s programs serve thousands of people each year, including those living with cancer, those who seek a retreat away from their daily lives or those who want to make healthy changes in their lifestyle.
