A Laguna Beach Treasure – Mr. Herb Nootbaar

Mission Hospital celebrates Mr. Nootbaar’s contributions to the hospital and community

A life-long philanthropist and long-time Laguna Beach resident, Herbert Nootbaar, has been a significant part of Mission Hospital Laguna Beach ever since the community’s first discussions about the critical need for a hospital. Thanks to Mr. Nootbaar’s community engagement and fundraising efforts, the hospital was established in 1959 as South Coast Medical Center and became Mission Hospital Laguna Beach in 2009.

Today, Mr. Nootbaar is 107 years young and continues to be an active and treasured member of the Mission Hospital family. He is a lifetime member of Mission Hospital’s distinguished Philanthropist Circle.

One of Mr. Nootbaar’s most notable gifts to the hospital helped to create the original radiation building in honor of his wife, Dorothy. After 52 years of marriage, Dorothy lost her eight-year battle with breast cancer in 1982. “We spent so much time traveling to Dorothy’s treatments and I wanted to provide a place here in Laguna Beach that would offer excellent care close to home.”

Mr. Nootbaar was not only generous with his treasures, but with his time and business expertise. Mr. Nootbaar has served in various hospital leadership capacities including two years as President of the Board of Directors. He was the innovator of the hospital’s support group, formerly known as The Winner Circle.

Following Dorothy’s death, Mr. Nootbaar married his longtime friend, Elinor who had also lost her husband. They shared a 27-year marriage, traveled to 129 countries together and were renowned for their charitable involvement in various service and church groups.

Recently Mr. Nootbaar made another very generous gift to Mission Hospital, which will support the hospital’s ability to meet the unique needs of individuals in our community by consistently providing the highest quality of care through our distinguished clinical institutes.

Mission Hospital thanks Mr. Nootbaar for his enduring support for Mission Hospital, helping to ensure that the Laguna Beach community has the highest quality medical care available as needed.
