Special Situations That Agonize Us in Caring for the Elderly

Holzgang, M.D., MACP Visiting Scholar Participants will explore several unique situations that face clinicians and families in the care of aging patients that bring unto tension the principles for respect of autonomy, beneficence, and professionalism/clinical integrity. From situations like acute emergencies in persons with advanced dementia, "lying" to persons with dementia, and the elderly patient who is not safe at home and refuses to move, Dr. Hodges will describe how to balance core ethical principles to arrive at a care plan that can be both ethically justified and practically managed.
