Groupthink and Caregivers' Projections: Addressing Barriers to Empathy
Presenter: Jodi Halpern, M.D., PhD Recorded: October 14, 2014 Series: Curtis R. Holzgang, M.D., MACP Visiting Scholar Care teams can make serious errors because they collectively misread patients. Some have described these errors as resulting from “groupthink” in which team members have reasons to share group misperceptions. The problem is not lack of caring but rather difficulty in maintaining perspective during a conflict. Reflective self-awareness and empathic curiosity can help overcome such challenges and improve patient care.
