From Detached Concern to Empathy: Humanizing Medical Practice

Evidence shows specific components of clinical empathy improves patient satisfaction and medical care. We will analyze a case which resulted in abandonment of a patient under the guise of respecting autonomy. We will reframe the core of empathy as engaged curiosity and cover specific skills to manage anxiety and restore empathic communication.
