Providence Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital’s (SRMH) injury prevention coordinator, Brooke Brand, hosted two STOP THE BLEED® trainings for nearly 100 Sonoma County educators over the past month.
STOP THE BLEED is the result of a collaborative effort led by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) to bring knowledge of bleeding control to the public.
Brooke trained 40 teachers at Mark West Charter and Mark West Elementary School and an additional 56 educators from the Santa Rosa City School District how to STOP THE BLEED. In addition, SRMH donated a total of 75 kits to the schools (with more on the way!) to ensure nearly 200 classrooms have tourniquets and other life-saving equipment in their first aid/emergency bags.
As we continue to witness or experience unexpected violence and injuries in our daily lives, including at schools, we know that a bleeding injury can happen anywhere and being prepared is key.
“Life-threatening bleeding can happen anytime, during serious accidents, traumatic events or disasters,” said Brooke. “By training our community members, we can transform them from witnesses to immediate responders and save more lives.”
