A new path to weight management, built around whole person care

June 2026

At Providence, weight management is about more than numbers on a scale. It’s about listening, understanding and creating a care experience that meets people with dignity and respect.

That philosophy is at the heart of the new medical weight management program at Providence's Center for Weight Management at Providence Portland Medical Center. Patients can receive personalized support from medical providers, dietitians and behavioral health specialists over the course of a year to help on their weight loss journey.

“Sometimes when you've been working on your own and feeling desperate about losing weight, it's a very brave decision to seek care or try to take a different path up the same hill,” says Kimi Fey Powers, lead physician associate and clinic spokesperson for the program.

Care that goes beyond medication

For Jenny, that personalized support made all the difference.

Like many people, Jenny had tried managing her weight with medication alone. While she saw some results, she knew something was missing.

“I got the prescription to get on the GLP‑1 from my doctor, and I was on it for a year,” Jenny says. “I did lose weight, but I went back to her and said, ‘I'm struggling with things. I just don't feel like this is such an easy fix.’”

Her physician recommended Providence’s medical weight management program — a decision Jenny now calls life‑changing.

Instead of a one‑size‑fits‑all solution, the program focuses on personalized care plans that address habits, mindset and long‑term health — not just weight loss.

“They taught me things about myself that I didn't know. They helped me navigate my weight gain, finding ways around it and trying to understand my own experiences,” Jenny says,

Small changes, meaningful progress

One of the most impactful shifts for Jenny came from identifying everyday triggers, and learning how to navigate them with support from her care team.

Together, Jenny and her team developed a simple but powerful strategy: Creating space between herself and food‑related triggers.

“What I had learned in this program is as soon as dinner wrapped up, that meant it was time for me to wrap up,” Jenny says.

That meant heading to her crafting room or office — a small change that helped her feel more in control, without guilt.

Her behavioral health psychologist also helped her work through the emotional side of those choices.

“Sometimes you have this guilt where you're like, ‘Oh, I'm leaving my family at the table.’ My team told me, ‘You have to start thinking about yourself.’”

Support that feels personal — because it is

Today, Jenny says she feels stronger physically and mentally, with renewed confidence and motivation.

“I am focused on exercise and strength training right now,” she says. “I am hyper‑focused on making sure I get my steps in for the day and at least three‑to‑four times a week with strength training.”

But what surprised her most wasn’t the progress. It was the people.

“I didn’t expect how invested everyone would be in me,” she says. “You sometimes feel like just a name or a number on a chart, but that was never the case. Every doctor, nurse, even down to the administrative staff were very helpful. I knew they wanted me to succeed.”

‘Extraordinarily well-informed every step of the way’

As lead physician associate, Kimi helps patients uncover underlying factors that influence weight and health, then partners with them to set goals that extend beyond the scale.

“Some goals patients have include weight loss, but also just as importantly, if not more so, non‑scale goals like improved mobility, more energy through the day, less chronic pain in their joints, and feeling more confident in their bodies,” she says.

The program blends medical treatment, nutrition guidance and behavioral health support — creating a coordinated experience that supports lasting change.

“We use a combination of tools that work best for each unique person and their needs,” Kimi says. “Regardless of what we utilize, I want to make sure that you feel empowered and extraordinarily well‑informed every step of the way.”
