From the moment patients arrive, their comfort, safety and well‑being depend on systems quietly working in the background; systems that our facilities team monitor around the clock.
A hospital is more than a building
“Our job is easy to say, but difficult to do." That quote comes from Andy Mason, facilities director at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. He describes the hospital as something far more complex than walls and corridors.
“A healthcare facility is different than any other building. It's literally a giant medical device and has to be maintained as such," he says.
Every space — from patient rooms to long care corridors — must support healing, reliability and peace of mind. That responsibility starts deep inside the hospital’s central plant.
The facilities team uses advanced efficiency systems to maintain comfortable temperatures without unnecessary energy use. A plate heat exchanger allows the hospital to cool buildings naturally when outdoor conditions allow, which delivers comfort to patients while conserving resources.
“This passive unit provides the cooling to our patients without having to spend the energy on a giant chiller," Andy says.
Small changes that make a big difference
Throughout the campus, thoughtful upgrades improve safety while supporting sustainability. One example: Converting fluorescent lighting to LED across hundreds of fixtures in long corridors used daily by patients and caregivers.
“Over the last six years, [this] has saved tens of thousands of dollars in electricity," Andy says.
Beyond cost savings, LEDs eliminate hazardous waste from mercury-containing bulbs, creating a safer environment for patients, caregivers and the community.
Protecting patients and the environment
Outside the building, sustainability continues. A bioswale system captures runoff from roads and parking areas, filtering pollutants before water safely returns to the ground and protects the Johnson Creek watershed below.
Inside, air quality is closely monitored. All air entering the hospital is filtered, processed and continuously checked to maintain clean, healthy conditions for patients — especially those most vulnerable.
“Our team monitors these systems constantly and lays eyes on it daily… to keep our patients safe and healthy.”
Facilities care may happen behind the scenes, but its impact is felt everywhere: In quiet rooms, clean air, comfortable temperatures and reliable systems that allow caregivers and clinicians to focus fully on healing.
