A $5.4 million gift from Foundation Trustee David Ho and his wife, Martha Ho, is advancing cancer care at Providence Saint John’s Health Center and Saint John’s Cancer Institute through the acquisition of the Varian Ethos Linear Accelerator, a leading-edge radiation therapy system.

The gift, made through the S. H. Ho Foundation Limited, supports the introduction of adaptive radiation therapy technology designed to deliver more precise and personalized cancer treatment.

The Varian Ethos Linear Accelerator represents a significant advancement in cancer care. Unlike traditional radiation systems that rely on fixed treatment plans, the Ethos system uses high-quality imaging and artificial intelligence to adapt therapy in real time based on changes in a patient’s anatomy, tumor size and organ movement.

This approach allows clinicians to optimize each treatment session while reducing exposure to healthy tissue.

At Providence Saint John’s, the technology will enhance care for patients with prostate, pancreatic, bladder, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers and expand the center’s capacity to treat more patients efficiently.

Saint John’s Cancer Institute has led cancer research, treatment and education for more than 35 years. Its multidisciplinary approach provides personalized care supported by specialists in prevention, early detection and advanced therapies.

The addition of the Varian Ethos system further strengthens Saint John’s position as a leader in cancer care and innovation.

David and Martha Ho have been deeply connected to Providence Saint John’s for decades. Their commitment is both philanthropic and personal. Their three children and nine grandchildren were all born at the hospital.

David Ho has served as a Foundation trustee since 2010, and Martha Ho is an active member of the Irene Dunne Guild. Together, their leadership and generosity have supported initiatives that advance patient care, expand clinical capabilities and enhance the patient experience.

This latest gift continues that legacy and helps ensure access to advanced treatments for patients now and in the future.

In addition to introducing new capabilities, the investment supports enhancements to existing radiation therapy technology, extending its lifespan and improving performance.

The new system is expected to increase patient capacity and provide more efficient treatments, helping meet the growing demand for cancer care in the community.

The addition of the Varian Ethos Linear Accelerator reinforces Providence Saint John’s commitment to delivering innovative, compassionate and patient-centered cancer care. The technology will support improved outcomes, greater efficiency and expanded access for patients across the region.
