Health center receives American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus award for proven dedication to best practices and life-saving care
For the third year in a row, Providence Saint John’s Health Center received the American Heart Association’s Gold Plus Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Quality Achievement Award for its commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of stroke.
Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the U.S. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Studies show that early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and speeding up recovery times.
The Get With The Guidelines Program was developed by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to help hospitals align stroke care with the latest evidence- and research-based guidelines.
As participants in the Get With The Guidelines Program, Providence Saint John’s qualified for the recognition by demonstrating how the health center committed to improving quality stroke care and how caregivers provided education to patients to help them manage their health and rehabilitation at home.
“Our stroke program is committed to offering research-backed treatments, working with our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) partners and educating our community about the signs and symptoms of stroke,” Stroke Program Coordinator Lisa Arnold, RN, BSN, SCRN, said. “We’re honored to be recognized again for our efforts to provide timely and effective stroke care to our patients.”
In addition to the Gold Plus Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Quality Achievement Award, Providence Saint John’s also received three additional recognitions from the Association: the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus, Target: Stroke Honor Roll Advanced Therapy award and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll-Stroke awards.
To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus award, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with tenecteplase (TNK), a thrombolytic clotting busting medication used for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke
The Target: Stroke Honor Roll Advanced Therapy award recognizes hospitals that successfully treated at least 50% of qualified stroke patients within 90 minutes of arriving directly to their facility and within 60 minutes of arriving by EMS transport.
Additionally, the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll-Stroke award honors hospitals that meet quality measures developed with more than 90% of compliance for 12 consecutive months for the “Overall Diabetes Cardiovascular Initiative Composite Score.”
The recognitions from the American Heart Association demonstrates Providence Saint John’s commitment to providing the latest evidence-based standards of care to all patients.
