Lung screenings are recommended annually for certain adults

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women and is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The good news is, if caught early, chances of survival drastically increase.

"Early detection of lung cancer can significantly improve survival rates," said Richard Gillespie, a thoracic oncologic surgeon and medical director at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center's Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center in Burbank.

In fact, lung cancer can be cured in up to 90% of people when it’s discovered in its early stages.

What is a lung screening?
Lung screening uses a low-dose CT scan to look for signs of cancer, such as spots or growths. It is covered by most insurance plans.

Who should get a lung screening?
Adults between 50 and 80 years of age who:

  • Have smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years, currently or within the last 15 years.
  • Have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer

How do I get screened?

  • If you qualify, your doctor can order the screening. A physician’s referral is required.
  • If you don’t have a physician, call our nurse navigator at 818-748-4763 to discuss your referral options.
